Sighting in Grasse, January 17, 2009

Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on January 17, 2009 in Grasse (Alpes-Maritimes, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

In the evening, at 9:05 p.m., a witness at home saw a bright red light drifting slowly and silently above the town. The light then climbed rapidly and vanished into the sky. According to the source, the sighting lasted a few minutes.

The witness described what they saw in great detail, and the GEIPAN considered the case to be of low strangeness. The reported features match those of a Thai lantern: red color, a halo, movement following the wind and a duration of a few minutes. The sighting took place on a Saturday, close to Chinese New Year. The GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: probable sighting of a Thai lantern passing by.
