Sighting in Haréville, September 26, 2015

Vosges, Grand Est, France

Sighting on September 26, 2015 in Haréville (Vosges, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

At about 3 p.m., a witness watched five white points in a clear blue sky for roughly five minutes. They drifted slowly closer and made no noise at all. The formation kept moving, then entered a cloud and the witness lost sight of it. Only one account was collected.

The investigation noted that white points travelling together in a blue sky, in the same direction as the wind, strongly suggest party balloons, possibly released during a celebration. The objects appeared to come from the north-east, from the direction of a neighbouring village, and the wind recorded at Nancy was indeed from the north-east. The day and time, a Saturday at 3 p.m., could fit a wedding, and one did take place in that village that day. GEIPAN did not pursue the inquiry any further to check this hypothesis. The case was classified B: probable observation of party balloons.
