Sighting in Haut-Rhin, December 3, 2010

Grand Est, France

Sighting on December 3, 2010, exact location not given (département: Haut-Rhin, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was pyrotechnics (fireworks, flares…) (class A).

What happened

At 7:17 p.m. on a Friday evening, a driver and their passenger noticed a group of white lights with a purplish tinge in the sky. The phenomenon then gradually faded away.

An Intervenant Premier Niveau (first-level investigator) tasked with following up contacted the town hall of Riedisheim. It confirmed that a humanitarian association had held a release of "luminous balloons" that same evening. Pyrotechnic "sticks" of the Blinklanzen type, from Switzerland, had been attached to helium-filled balloons. No photographs of the event were taken.

The town hall's confirmation and the information gathered left no doubt about what had been seen. GEIPAN therefore classed the case as A: it was fully identified.
