Sighting in Hayange, January 6, 1982

Moselle, Grand Est, France

Sighting on January 6, 1982 in Hayange (Moselle, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

In the late afternoon, several witnesses noticed a luminous phenomenon that struck them as unusual. It was an object giving off red, white and blue lights. It moved slowly and then vanished at the horizon.

The GEIPAN investigation established that a civil airliner had passed through the area between 6 and 7 p.m. The aircraft was fitted with "strobe"-type navigation lights in the same colours the witnesses described. The sighting therefore most likely corresponds to this aircraft, and the case was classified B, probably identified.
