Sighting in Hayange, October 13, 2007

Moselle, Grand Est, France

Sighting on October 13, 2007 in Hayange (Moselle, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

A witness contacted the GEIPAN on 31 March 2009 to report two sightings: a yellow ball seen on Sunday 22 March 2009, and a similar one seen on 13 October. The GEIPAN analysed the two events together but handled them as two separate case files. In this case, the witness saw luminous phenomena moving across the sky and changing direction.

The GEIPAN tried to get back in touch with the witness in 2012, but the telephone number and email address given in 2009 no longer worked. Apart from the changes of direction, the account closely resembles what the atmospheric re-entry of satellite debris or a meteoroid would look like, or else a festive lantern. The sighting was judged to have a medium level of strangeness, but the account as a whole was not consistent enough to justify a D1 classification. The case was classed C, because there were no independent witnesses and no way to cross-check the account, so the available information was insufficient.
