Sighting in Hayange, November 16, 2017

Moselle, Grand Est, France

Sighting on November 16, 2017 in Hayange (Moselle, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

Shortly before one in the morning, the witness stepped outside to smoke a cigarette. Toward the north, they noticed a bright point in the sky that looked like a star, but was white with some red in it. The point seemed to move from right to left, then up and down, roughly in a circle. The witness watched it for about a quarter of an hour, then went back indoors, so they did not see it disappear. They had time to film it.

This was the only account collected. The case has fairly low consistency: a lot of information is missing, and the video was never obtained because the witness could not be reached despite the efforts of GEIPAN. The strangeness lies mainly in the fact that no notable star in the north could explain a mistaken identification. The movements described might be due to an autokinetic effect, but the witness stated that the phenomenon climbed to 90° at the end of the observation, which also accounts for the high strangeness of the case. Under GEIPAN methodology, a D classification requires consistency to be as strong as the strangeness, which it was not here. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as C, for insufficient information.
