Sighting in Hérouville-Saint-Clair, November 10, 2010

Calvados, Normandie, France

Sighting on November 10, 2010 in Hérouville-Saint-Clair (Calvados, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At midnight, on the night of Tuesday 9 to Wednesday 10 November 2010, the witness was in the kitchen of their apartment, looking at the stars. They noticed three yellowish lights moving together and forming a triangle. All three points of light vanished abruptly after only about two seconds of observation. The witness reported seeing the same thing again a few days later, but the date, time, duration and circumstances of that second sighting are unknown.

The investigation ruled out satellites, which did not fit the late hour. The yellowish colour and a movement consistent with the wind direction suggested the witness might have mistaken Thai lanterns for something else, seen just as they went out. Such lanterns are usually released during celebrations, most often at weekends. The observation was too short to confirm this explanation, though it remained possible. The witness did not say whether the window was open or closed, so a reflection of a light fixture in the kitchen could not be excluded either.

The case had little substance, and its strangeness was hard to assess given how brief the sighting was, so no conclusion could be reached. GEIPAN classified it C, for lack of independent testimony and corroboration.
