Sighting in Hyères, December 10, 2025

Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on December 10, 2025 in Hyères (Var, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a meteor or fireball (class A).

What happened

At around 11:03 p.m., the witness was outdoors near their home on the Giens peninsula. According to their account, the sky was very clear. They saw three or four bright objects cross the sky at very high speed, moving from south to north. Each left long green, red and blue trails behind it, which gave the witness the impression of a powerful and unusual form of propulsion. The whole event lasted only about five seconds.

The investigation found that the strangeness the witness felt came from several features rarely seen together: the brevity, the speed, the parallel trails and the strongly contrasting colours. A fragmenting bolide can create the illusion of a formation of objects flying together, when its fragments are simply following the same trajectory. Cloud cover may have made the trails look smooth and uniform. The colours are consistent with ionisation of the atmosphere and the mineral composition of the meteoroid, and the fading out within one to two seconds is typical of a bolide burning out at altitude.

A strict match in timing was also established: at the same moment, three independent witnesses in Nice and Antibes reported bolides to the Vigie-Ciel network. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as A: observation of a bolide re-entering the atmosphere.
