Sighting in Jazeneuil, July 14, 2007
Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France
Sighting from an aircraft on July 14, 2007 in Jazeneuil (Vienne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an identified cause of another kind (class B).
What happened
On an afternoon in summer, the captain of an Air France flight reported a T-CAS alert warning of traffic very close to the aircraft. On their screens, the pilots saw a red blip about 30 nautical miles (55 km) away and 300 feet (100 m) above the aircraft. Although visibility was exceptional, the pilots saw no object. Air traffic control, for its part, detected no unknown traffic on its radar screen.
A preliminary inquiry by the Bureau Enquête Analyse at Le Bourget, carried out for the DGAC, attributed the phenomenon to false echoes. The expert assessment done for the GEIPAN pointed to a probable malfunction of an onboard instrument, the traffic alert and collision avoidance system (T-CAS). The case was classified B: probably identified.
