Sighting in Kerlouan, February 22, 2015

Finistère, Bretagne, France

Sighting on February 22, 2015 in Kerlouan (Finistère, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At 3:03 in the morning, a witness looking out of a window noticed an orange glow moving across a clear sky. More identical glows followed, and the witness eventually counted 27 of them. They all came from the north-north-east and vanished toward the east, in a way the witness described as lightning-fast. The sighting lasted 34 minutes, and no sound was heard at any point. No photographs were taken and no other witness accounts were collected.

GEIPAN considered the hypothesis of Thai lanterns. The colour, brightness, duration, number of lights, date, time of day and the identical path followed by every object all support it. However, the people who released them were never identified. The sudden disappearance toward the east matches the lanterns burning out: as is often the case, the witness most likely read the rapid drop in brightness as an extremely fast departure. GEIPAN classified the case as B, a probable sighting of Thai lanterns released at the end of a private party.
