Sighting in Landivisiau, March 18, 1979

Finistère, Bretagne, France

Sighting on March 18, 1979 in Landivisiau (Finistère, France). After investigation, GEIPAN considers this phenomenon unexplained (class D).

What happened

At about 9:15 pm, a driver and their passenger were travelling along an expressway when they noticed a dark object, fluorescent grey and shaped like a rocket, about three metres above the road. It moved slowly northward without making a sound. The car passed quickly beneath it.

At about 9:45 pm, on the return trip and at roughly the same spot, the driver saw a different object: a flat wing of about 3 square metres hanging above the expressway. The driver described it as a grey metal mesh a few centimetres thick, the whole thing seeming to move in a wavelike motion. After passing over the car, the object stopped 3 or 4 metres in front of it. Shaken, the driver sped up to get underneath it. They heard no particular noise and saw no lights, and the object did not appear to give off any heat.

Each sighting lasted only a few seconds, at night, in continuous rain and near Brest-Guipavas airport. The gendarmerie found no traces and no further information was gathered. GEIPAN classified the case as D: the phenomenon remains unidentified.
