Sighting in La Courtine, December 23, 1976

Creuse, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on December 23, 1976 in La Courtine (Creuse, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

Shortly after 2:20 in the morning, a soldier on guard duty noticed an object passing at low altitude. It was round and carried several lamps giving off a bright red light. Another red lamp on its top rotated like a beacon light. The craft moved slowly and made a continuous whistling sound of moderate loudness. It then disappeared behind a building that hid it from view. The sighting lasted about thirty seconds.

No other direct witness came forward. GEIPAN classified the case as B: the soldier most likely saw a helicopter-type aircraft pass by.
