Sighting in La Foa, January 9, 2011

France

Sighting on January 9, 2011 in La Foa (France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

Two witnesses noticed a bright, spherical object hanging motionless above an airfield early in the morning. They filmed it for a long time and heard no particular noise while they watched it.

When they later played back the footage, they found other objects that they had not seen directly while filming. The testimony therefore describes two separate phenomena. The first is a shiny, metallic-looking sphere, whose description suggests a scientific balloon, though not one belonging to Meteo-France. The second consists of dark objects crossing the camera's field of view at high speed.

GEIPAN concluded that the dark objects were very probably flying insects passing about one metre from the lens. The case was classified B (probably identified).
