Sighting in La Forêt-Fouesnant, December 10, 2018

On a Monday morning in December, between 7:20 and 7:40 a.m., a witness was driving along the driveway of their home when an unusual phenomenon caught their attention to the west, low above a field. They stopped the car. They described it as an "electric" yellow bar with a large fluorescent green headlight at its centre. The window was open, and the witness heard no noise at all while the phenomenon moved about.

The phenomenon first moved slowly and steadily, then turned due south toward the witness and stayed stationary. When the witness reached the end of the driveway, they turned around and saw the bar head due east and slowly vanish into the mist. Because the car moved and stopped during the sighting, the observation was discontinuous and lasted about a minute and a half. Afterwards, the witness reported a problem with the car radio. They said the strangeness lay in the completely silent, steady movement and in the luminous appearance. No other witness account was gathered.

The investigation looked at several hypotheses: a drone, reflections of floodlights from farm machinery or of sky-tracer type lasers on the clouds, and a wind-borne object such as a Thai lantern. None was retained. The three-phase trajectory with a stop in the middle, the large perceived size, the slow speed and the very sharp outlines argue against them. Night drone flights are not permitted in France, and no farm machinery was present on the plots. The drone remained the strongest hypothesis, but its probability was judged well below 50%. The witness was precise and very cooperative, and took part in a field investigation with reconstructions and a cognitive interview. The testimony was of good consistency, but no explanation could be shown to be more than 50% probable, so the GEIPAN classified the case D1, unidentified phenomenon.
