Sighting in Le Grand-Bornand, January 7, 2014

Haute-Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on January 7, 2014 in Le Grand-Bornand (Haute-Savoie, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class B).

What happened

At around 10 p.m., a witness saw about fifteen blue or white lights in the sky while looking south toward La Clusaz, which lies behind the Danay mountain. The lights moved around quickly and made no sound.

The investigation found that a nightclub in La Clusaz, roughly 4 km south of the observation point, has a laser that it runs every evening, weekdays included. The laser projects a white spot that quickly traces circles in the sky. The sighting ended when the sky cleared, which supports the idea that the witness saw a beam projected onto clouds. The witness, who knew the area well, nevertheless felt that what they had seen was not a nightclub laser.

The gendarmerie report also noted that the witness had taken a painkiller containing tramadol that day, which can rarely cause hallucinations. Their perception may therefore have been affected by the medication. GEIPAN classified the case as B: a probable projection of a nightclub laser onto the clouds.
