Sighting in Le Havre, May 30, 2015

Seine-Maritime, Normandie, France

Sighting on May 30, 2015 in Le Havre (Seine-Maritime, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).

What happened

At around 2 p.m., a witness was watching skydiving drop planes moving across the sky. Between two of the aircraft, they noticed a white object coming down in a zigzag, with sudden, rapid movements. The object then moved away at what the witness considered a phenomenal speed. They described it as flat and rectangular.

The GEIPAN contacted a skydiving club in Honfleur, which confirmed that repeated flights had taken place that day to drop parachutists. A club official explained that objects sometimes fall out of the planes during these flights, and that they never follow a direct path but instead drift in arabesques caused by air currents. An object released in flight keeps the aircraft's speed, then is acted on by gravity, by aerodynamic forces that slow it and make it tumble, by the prevailing wind and by possible local air currents, sometimes rising ones. The combined effect of these forces can account for a chaotic trajectory, especially as the object was probably very light. Its shape could have been that of a piece of cardboard.

The GEIPAN classified the case as B: probably an object that fell from a skydiver drop plane.
