Sighting in Le Luc, October 22, 1984

Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on October 22, 1984 in Le Luc (Var, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty (class A).

What happened

Around 6:50 in the evening, two motorists were driving near a railway line when they noticed a very bright light. It looked like a white ball, with a white beam with sharply defined edges extending from it. The car windows were closed, so the witnesses heard no sound.

The investigation established that the light was the 600-watt searchlight of a Puma helicopter on its approach to land at the military base nearby. GEIPAN classified the case as A (identified): what the witnesses saw was the beam from a helicopter's searchlight.
