Sighting in Les Sauvages, January 25, 2020

Rhône, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on January 25, 2020 in Les Sauvages (Rhône, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class A).

What happened

Between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m., a witness who could not sleep went outside with their dog. During the walk, they noticed a large white ball moving across a low, hazy sky. It went back and forth above the D8 road, making wide turns level with the witness. No sound was heard. Only one account was collected, but it was fairly precise, and the sighting lasted about half an hour.

The GEIPAN investigation rated the case as having low strangeness and good consistency. The description matches a skytracer, a lighting projector: round shape, back-and-forth movement along an oval path, long duration, overcast sky and white color. The object's strong brightness and the low height of the clouds point to a nearby projector. A nightclub only 9 km from the observation site has a skytracer, which was operating at the time. The club lies to the north, consistent with the direction in which the phenomenon was seen. The case is classed A: misidentification of a skytracer.
