Sighting in Lorgues, July 31, 2014

Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on July 31, 2014 in Lorgues (Var, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

At about 8:40 pm, a witness and their family noticed a dark-coloured object in a clear sky, which appeared to be about the size of an airliner. It moved slowly and without any sound from east to west, swaying as it went and seeming to rotate on itself. Some twinkling was noticed. The witnesses saw no trail and no halo, and no photos were taken.

Only one account was collected, from three people who know each other and gave their statements independently. GEIPAN found it precise and consistent. The sighting was strange, since the object looked unusual and behaved in an unusual way. However, its speed, size, shape, colour and trajectory showed nothing extraordinary that could not be explained. Based on the objective elements in the investigation report, the case was classified B: the object was probably something carried by the wind.
