Sighting in Magny-en-Vexin, May 10, 2009

Val-d'Oise, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on May 10, 2009 in Magny-en-Vexin (Val-d'Oise, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a meteor or fireball (class B).

What happened

At about 2:58 a.m., two people sitting in a vehicle saw a white sphere with a faint halo around it pass by at high speed. It followed a straight path from the southwest to the northeast, then vanished completely. The sighting lasted only a few seconds.

The GEIPAN considered the case to be of low strangeness and highly consistent, with all the characteristics of a meteoroid entering the atmosphere. No other witness accounts were gathered, however, so a firm conclusion was not possible. The case was classified B: probable sighting of a bolide, meaning the atmospheric entry of a meteoroid.
