Sighting in Mardié, August 28, 2016

Loiret, Centre-Val de Loire, France

Sighting on August 28, 2016 in Mardié (Loiret, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a sky lantern (class A).

What happened

The witness was at a dinner with about thirty other guests. A few minutes after midnight, on the night between Saturday and Sunday, they noticed an orange glow in the sky moving from south to north, in complete silence. A few minutes later a second glow appeared and followed the same path. The same thing happened again between seven and ten times in all, each time with the same appearance, speed and altitude. A photograph was taken. Only one witness account was collected.

The GEIPAN investigation concluded that this was a release of Thai lanterns. The direction of travel matched the wind direction, and the look of the lights, their trajectory and their repetition were all consistent with that explanation. Analysis of the photograph's colors with the IPACO software was compatible with lanterns. It was also a weekend night, a likely time for a festive event. The case is classified A: identified, very probably Thai lanterns.
