Moselle, Grand Est, France

Sighting on December 3, 1979 in Metz (Moselle, France). After investigation, GEIPAN considers this phenomenon unexplained (class D).

What happened

At around 4:50 p.m., two witnesses saw a triangular object trailing two streaks of red smoke. As it passed over a radio relay tower, the object stopped for a few seconds and then moved off again. The two witnesses watched it until it was out of sight, and the red smoke remained visible right up to the end of the observation.

At the same moment, a third witness noticed a very bright point. No correlation could be established between that sighting and the one made by the other two.

The investigation could not identify any air traffic matching what was observed. The case remained unexplained and was classified D by GEIPAN.
