Sighting in Metz, July 17, 2015
Moselle, Grand Est, France
Sighting on July 17, 2015 in Metz (Moselle, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).
What happened
At 10:30 p.m., five people noticed a round, orange object close to a storm cloud. After about ten minutes the light moved away, then came back before vanishing a second time. Fighter jets were seen at that moment. Photos taken with mobile phones could not be used. Only one witness account was collected.
According to GEIPAN, the strangeness of the case comes mostly from the observation happening alongside two known phenomena, the thunderstorm and the fighter jets. The witness linked them without realizing it, although nothing suggests a connection between the three beyond the fact that they occurred at the same time and in the same place. The account is not very consistent, since little usable information was gathered, and the observation was made at night in poor conditions. Some clues point to a possible confusion with two Thai lanterns, but the lack of concrete data prevents any conclusion. The case is therefore classified C: insufficient data.
