Sighting in Meung-sur-Loire, March 25, 2021

Loiret, Centre-Val de Loire, France

Sighting on March 25, 2021 in Meung-sur-Loire (Loiret, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class A).

What happened

At around 10:15 p.m., a witness noticed moving coloured lights in the night sky. Together they formed a large, triangular-shaped object. The witness also heard a faint, dull, muffled sound. They found both the sound and the object's speed odd. GEIPAN received only one witness account.

The investigation left no doubt about the explanation, given the aviation context. A military A400M aircraft with the call sign CUJAS95 has a wingspan of more than 42 metres, a length of 45 metres and a height of 15 metres, which accounts for the impression of a large object. The map of the Centre National des Opérations Aériennes (CNOA) and the FlightAware website both confirmed the nature of the object seen that evening, between roughly 10:10 and 10:15 p.m. Internet searches also turned up other witnesses. GEIPAN classified the case as A: the witness had mistaken a military aircraft for an unknown object.
