Sighting in Millery, February 27, 2010

Meurthe-et-Moselle, Grand Est, France

Sighting on February 27, 2010 in Millery (Meurthe-et-Moselle, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an atmospheric optical phenomenon (halo, sun dog…) (class A).

What happened

At 1:58 pm, a witness noticed a luminous phenomenon that intrigued them, toward the south-southwest. It consisted of a round glow in rainbow colors, along with a second, white glow. The witness watched them for about two minutes and heard no sound. They took two photographs.

GEIPAN's investigation found nothing strange, either in the description recorded in the report or in the two photographs. The pictures show scattered cirrus clouds, well known to meteorologists: mostly white filaments with a fibrous look and a silky sheen. The "flying objects" the witness described and photographed lay in the direction of the sun, to the south, seen through the cloud layer. The rainbow colors of the second object correspond to the visible spectrum of sunlight. The case was classified A: it was an observation of the sun.
