Sighting in Mios, June 13, 2020

Gironde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on June 13, 2020 in Mios (Gironde, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a sky lantern (class A).

What happened

At around 11:30 p.m., two people in a car park noticed a yellow or orange-red light in the night sky, toward the north-east. It made no noise and hardly moved. The witnesses described its shape as an "upside-down Y". It disappeared quickly. One of the witnesses managed to photograph it with a mobile phone. No other accounts were collected.

On analysis, GEIPAN found that some strangeness remained, mainly because of how the witnesses described the phenomenon. The case was judged to have medium consistency: there were two witnesses and photographs, but their accounts contradicted each other and the shape they described did not match the one in the images. In the photos, the appearance of the light, particularly its orange colour, suggests a flying lantern. The sighting took place on a Saturday evening at around 11:30 p.m., a likely time for a lantern release. The apparent lack of movement fits with wind that was absent or very light. Finally, the way the light vanished, with one witness seeing it move away and the other seeing it shrink and go out, matches a candle flame gradually dimming until it dies. The case was classified A: observation of a flying lantern.
