Sighting in Montigny-lès-Metz, October 7, 1976

Moselle, Grand Est, France

Sighting on October 7, 1976 in Montigny-lès-Metz (Moselle, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).

What happened

At around 7 p.m., several teenagers watched an object cross the sky quickly above the houses in their neighbourhood. It lasted only a few seconds. They described it as red, cigar-shaped and silent, moving from the southeast to the northwest. No adult saw it, but the local press reported the story because one of the parents insisted.

The GEIPAN investigation concluded that the young witnesses had probably seen an aircraft go by, since air traffic is heavy in this area close to Metz airport. The case was classified B (probably identified).
