Sighting in Mortagne-sur-Sèvre, October 31, 2006

Vendée, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on October 31, 2006 in Mortagne-sur-Sèvre (Vendée, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class A).

What happened

A motorist noticed an unusual light phenomenon behind the clouds: a flashing white light that seemed to move slowly across the sky. That same evening, an electric string of lights set up on a viaduct was switched on and operating. The gendarmerie investigation established that the witness, misled by the poor weather conditions, had mistaken this light display for a UFO. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as A: the sighting was explained by the lighting display on the viaduct.
