Sighting in Morzine, August 14, 2009

Haute-Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on August 14, 2009 in Morzine (Haute-Savoie, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 10:55 pm, a witness was intrigued by a round, red-orange object that crossed the sky very quickly, travelling from the southeast to the northwest. The sighting lasted two to three seconds, and no trail was noticed. At about 11:10 pm, the witness made a second observation, lasting about one second, of another object moving in the same southeast-to-northwest direction.

A bolide (a falling meteorite) was considered, but the lack of a trail is surprising, and GEIPAN found no confirmation from other observations. The straight-line motion gives the case a medium level of strangeness, yet the account remains too imprecise and its consistency too weak as it stands. A field investigation more than four years after the events would bring little new information. The case is classified C (insufficient data) for lack of independent testimonies and cross-checking.
