Sighting in Mougins, June 25, 2016

Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on June 25, 2016 in Mougins (Alpes-Maritimes, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

Shortly after midnight, at 12:13 a.m. and again at 12:14 a.m., two witnesses on their terrace saw round, yellow-red luminous phenomena appear one after the other and move across the night sky. No noise was noticed, and the phenomena quickly disappeared.

Only one of the two witnesses went to the gendarmerie, and part of that statement relayed what their spouse had observed. According to the report, the phenomena looked like points of light, were very bright, mostly yellow and red, and followed a straight path. In each of the two sequences they stopped moving for about 5 seconds. The first sequence was observed for 4 seconds, the second for 15 to 20 seconds. The direction given was south-east, with no indication of which sequence it referred to. The report also included a photograph showing a circular white light, with no statement that it was connected to the sighting.

GEIPAN noted that these details could fit several known phenomena (a satellite, a meteor, an aircraft or a helicopter), but none of these could be confirmed or ruled out. It is unknown whether the path stayed straight throughout, which sequence the direction applied to, and how high above the horizon the phenomena appeared. The durations of observation and of the stationary phase given by the witness contradict each other. The witness never answered GEIPAN's request to fill in a questionnaire, and the spouse's account was never provided despite follow-up requests. For lack of reliable information, the case was classified C.
