Sighting in Nancy, April 19, 2008

Meurthe-et-Moselle, Grand Est, France

Sighting on April 19, 2008 in Nancy (Meurthe-et-Moselle, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 9:20 p.m., three people were looking at the sky when they saw three large yellow-orange points of light moving slowly. No particular sound was heard during the sighting. The lights then vanished all at once. One of the witnesses thought to take a photograph, but its poor quality and the lack of any reference points in the image mean it can only illustrate the account and adds nothing to the analysis.

The investigation found that the account has all the characteristics of flying lanterns. A firm conclusion was not possible, however: the witness gave no terrestrial or celestial landmarks to pin down the direction of travel, which they estimated as running from the southeast to the northeast. The recorded wind was from the east-northeast, which does not fit that direction. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B, a probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
