Sighting in Nancy, February 3, 2012

Meurthe-et-Moselle, Grand Est, France

Sighting on February 3, 2012 in Nancy (Meurthe-et-Moselle, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft contrail (class B).

What happened

The witness reported in January 2015 an observation that had taken place in February 2012. At 6:04 pm, they saw a very bright, yellow, elongated light in the sky to the north or north-west. It moved slowly and silently in a straight line. The witness took the time to photograph it during the observation, which lasted about two minutes, and the phenomenon then disappeared. The sun had set about thirty minutes earlier. No other witness account was collected.

According to the investigation, these features match very well the condensation trail of a distant aircraft, more than 50 km away, lit by the setting sun. A clear sky is all that is needed to see this kind of phenomenon in the half hour after sunset, or before sunrise. GEIPAN classified the case as B: a probable aircraft trail.
