Sighting in Nancy, October 13, 2013

Meurthe-et-Moselle, Grand Est, France

Sighting from an aircraft on October 13, 2013 in Nancy (Meurthe-et-Moselle, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a meteor or fireball (class A).

What happened

Four pilots saw a powerful luminous phenomenon in the sky over eastern France. Their aircraft were at different positions, which were estimated in the aeronautical questionnaire. The object crossed the sky quickly and gave off a blue-green light. People on the ground saw it too, as a press article reports, and the BOAM network camera at Chaligny, near Nancy, recorded it as well.

The investigation tied all these observations to a single event: a bolide, meaning a meteoroid entering the atmosphere, in other words a meteorite fall. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as A, the category for identified phenomena.
