Sighting in Nancy, September 1, 2021

Meurthe-et-Moselle, Grand Est, France

Sighting on September 1, 2021 in Nancy (Meurthe-et-Moselle, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a meteor or fireball (class A).

What happened

At 5:13 in the morning, the witness was looking out of a ground-floor window at home when they noticed an extremely bright, white, oval-shaped unidentified aerial phenomenon. It crossed their field of view in three or four seconds and seemed to be coming down to land in the direction of the Grands Moulins de Paris. The witness was struck by the intensity of the light, the size of the object and, above all, its speed and movement. They took photos.

The investigation, using data from the FRIPON network, established that a bolide crossed the sky at exactly the same moment. The azimuths recalculated from the witness's photos match the bolide's trajectory. The angular height of about 19° fits the field of view allowed by the window, and the magnitude of -4.7 corresponds to an extremely bright object, as described. GEIPAN considered the case consistent and precise. The strangeness the witness felt is compatible with watching a bolide, and the case was classified A.
