Sighting in Nice, June 7, 2009

Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on June 7, 2009 in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an animal or natural object (bird, insect, pollen…) (class B).

What happened

The witness took several photographs at 1:39 pm on the Caussol plateau. Only afterwards, while looking through them, did they notice a ring-shaped, silvery form in the upper left corner of one image. They had not seen anything of the kind when taking the pictures, so the object was never observed directly.

The investigation found that the blurred shape clearly resembles an insect in flight, with a body and wings visible, most likely very close to the lens. The landscape and the time of year are both favourable to insects. GEIPAN classed the case as B: the photograph probably shows a small flying insect.
