Sighting in Nouméa, 1973

France

Sighting in 1973 in Nouméa (France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 11 p.m. one evening in 1973, a child and their parents noticed lights of several colours above Magenta Bay. The lights stayed motionless over the water. The witnesses first thought they were aircraft, but when they drove past the airfield they were very surprised to find it completely closed.

An inquiry the next day established that no plane or helicopter had flown anywhere on the island. The witness mentioned other people who had made similar observations that same night, but no further information about them could be gathered.

GEIPAN concluded that five multicoloured glows had been observed above the sea. Because there was not enough information to go on, the case was classed C (insufficient data).
