Sighting in Paris, November 7, 2022

Île-de-France, France

Sighting on November 7, 2022, exact location not given (département: Paris, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a reflection or photographic artefact (class A).

What happened

The witness reported in 2025 an observation made in 2022. At around 10:45 pm, standing at their kitchen window, they photographed the inner courtyard of their building, which was lit by the full Moon, visible in their field of view. On the very first photo they noticed a small blue sphere above the buildings on the other side of the courtyard. They took more pictures, and later, on their computer, confirmed that the blue ball also appeared in those images.

The GEIPAN rated the case's consistency as good, since two photographs could be analysed, even though there was only one account, given long after the event. Its image analysis software, IPACO, showed unambiguously on both photos that the object was a parasitic reflection of the Moon in the lens of the smartphone. The Moon, present in the frame, was overexposed. This kind of reflection comes from the internal technology of the sensor and appears opposite a strong light source, along a central symmetry through the optical centre of the lens. Its round shape matches that of the Moon, and its colour, which can be blue, green or red, is typical of the protective outer coating of the front lens element. Such a phenomenon is only visible on the device's screen or afterwards, on a computer for example.

The GEIPAN classified the case as A: a parasitic lens-reflection artefact.
