Sighting in Péroy-les-Gombries, December 3, 2009

Oise, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on December 3, 2009 in Péroy-les-Gombries (Oise, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a meteor or fireball (class B).

What happened

At around 10:30 pm, a driver saw a luminous phenomenon cross the sky very quickly, very low down. The witness described two halos of extremely intense light. No other witness came forward to report this event.

The investigation found the description fully consistent with a meteor or with the re-entry of space debris into the atmosphere: bright light, high speed and a straight trajectory. The apparent double trail was most likely the object breaking up as it entered the atmosphere, which is a common occurrence. GEIPAN classified the case as B (probably identified), the probable explanation being an atmospheric re-entry.
