Sighting in Pignans, June 3, 2013

Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on June 3, 2013 in Pignans (Var, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).

What happened

At around 11:30 pm, a witness and their spouse saw fixed lights arranged in a triangle in the night sky. The witness first took them for an aircraft. The lights then drew closer, and the witness made out a dark, flat shape between them. A poor-quality video was recorded. Only one account was collected, since the two people present were not independent of each other.

GEIPAN considered the case odd enough to send an investigator to the site. The investigation found the observation to be highly consistent: the video leaves no doubt that the phenomenon was real, and its apparent trajectory could be estimated well. Its strangeness, however, turned out to be low, because the behavior observed matches that of several well-known flying machines. A few points remained unexplained, but the appearance described fits a group of helicopters. The case was therefore classified B, probably identified.
