Sighting in Polynesie, September 26, 1983

France

Sighting on September 26, 1983 in Polynesie (France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

Several witnesses noticed luminous points moving across the sky between 6:48 and 7:00 p.m. The points varied in size and in color. They travelled at high altitude and at great speed, and their passage made no noise. According to the witnesses, the sighting lasted from one minute to several minutes. Each point left a colored trail behind it.

Based on these descriptions, the GEIPAN favors the hypothesis of a fairly large atmospheric re-entry. The case is classified B: probably identified, most likely an atmospheric re-entry.
