What happened

Two witnesses, independent of each other, saw a very bright ball of light. It fell into the sea, and its fall was accompanied by a loud noise like an explosion.

The GEIPAN investigation concluded that this was probably an atmospheric reentry. It could not be determined whether the object was natural or artificial. The case is classified B (probably identified).
