Sighting in Pont-à-Mousson, January 12, 2022

Meurthe-et-Moselle, Grand Est, France

Sighting on January 12, 2022 in Pont-à-Mousson (Meurthe-et-Moselle, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a balloon (class A).

What happened

The witness was out walking with two other people on the edge of town when they noticed an aluminium-coloured and black tubular object in the sky to the east. The three of them watched it travel in a straight line, and at times it seemed to spin on its own axis. The sighting lasted five minutes, after which they lost sight of it.

Only one of the three witnesses filled in a questionnaire, but two videos and a photograph usefully supplemented it, giving the case good consistency. The investigation concluded that the object was being carried by the wind and was most probably a mylar party balloon. The strangeness the witness perceived came mainly from its tubular shape, but mylar balloons come in many shapes, and some can look tubular. The GEIPAN classified the case as A: mylar party balloon.
