Sighting in Réhon, May 31, 1993

In the night of 30 to 31 May 1993, at around 2 a.m., a family was driving home from a family celebration. The mother and her son noticed between six and eight luminous, egg-shaped forms in the overcast sky and watched them for about five minutes. The forms moved in jumps and circled within a small area, or travelled from right to left, zigzagging through the clouds. The other family members saw nothing, so only two accounts were collected, in a gendarmerie report.

The case was first classified D under the name HERSERANGE (54) 1993 and was later re-examined by the GEIPAN. It concluded that the witnesses had mistaken a set of "Skytracker" or "SkyRose" type lasers for something else. The number of forms, their shape, their visibility and their behaviour all support this. The sighting took place at the end of the week, a time when such equipment is more likely to be in use, either at a nightclub or at a private party. Laser shows of this kind are common today, but were rarer in 1993. It was not possible to trace the source of the show at the location or nearby. However, another case from the same year, ILE BOUCHARD (37), led to the discovery of such a show and showed that this equipment was being sold to nightclubs in France.

The GEIPAN classified the case as B: the sighting was probably, though not definitely, a laser or "Sky Rose", because the installation could not be identified and the compatibility of the weather conditions could not be checked.
