Sighting in Remiremont, July 6, 2007
Vosges, Grand Est, France
Sighting on July 6, 2007 in Remiremont (Vosges, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class A).
What happened
At about one in the morning, a driver and their spouse saw a hazy light phenomenon, bluish-white, shaped like a slightly tilted oval ring. It moved silently across a cloudy sky. Around the ring, the two witnesses could also make out several luminous circles. The phenomenon seemed to follow the car between the edge of Remiremont and Dinozé, which frightened them. Once they got home, they kept watching it. The sighting, which was intermittent, lasted about 35 minutes and covered a little over twenty kilometres.
The appearance they described closely resembles the images a sky tracer, a multi-beam laser projector, casts onto the underside of clouds. The investigation established that a nightclub in Épinal owned such equipment at the time, and that the phenomenon's visibility and behaviour matched the testimony. In 2007 the projector ran on Thursdays, as well as on Friday and Saturday nights. In 2015 the hypothesis could still be checked, in cloudy weather from 11 p.m., on the nights from Thursday to Friday, Friday to Saturday and Saturday to Sunday. Thanks to the witnesses' clear recollections, the notes one of them took at the time, and the investigators' careful reconstruction, the case was classified A: mistaken identification of a sky tracer.
