Sighting in Remiremont, September 13, 2007

Vosges, Grand Est, France

Sighting on September 13, 2007 in Remiremont (Vosges, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably one or more satellites (class B).

What happened

Between 5:08 and 5:13 a.m., a witness standing outside their home saw two white points of light with reddish glints move from north to south. They were about two degrees apart. The witness heard no sound at any point during the sighting, and had the impression that the lights were motionless for the first five seconds.

The investigation compared this description with a satellite pass: a straight trajectory, objects that faded out gradually, and many satellites crossing this path at that time of day and season. The two lights could have been a satellite and its launcher. On 11 September 2007, the COSMOS 2429 launcher had placed the SL-8 R/B satellite into a near-polar orbit, although the time when its pass would have been visible could not be checked. Two points fit this explanation poorly: the strong brightness, since such objects should not have been so bright (magnitude 4), and the perceived stillness at the start, which may have been a misperception.

Despite these uncertainties, GEIPAN classified the case as B, probable observation of satellites, because the phenomenon showed little strangeness.
