Sighting in Rentree Atmospherique, January 24, 2012

France

Sighting on January 24, 2012 in Rentree Atmospherique (France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a meteor or fireball (class A).

What happened

The GEIPAN received a large number of reports describing a luminous phenomenon crossing the sky over the Lorraine region at around 7:50 in the morning. The source does not give details on the shape, colour, duration or path that witnesses observed.

On review, all of these reports clearly matched the sighting of a bolide, meaning a naturally occurring meteoroid (a small asteroid) entering the atmosphere. The reforme-meteor network also identified the event as a natural bolide. The case was classified A, meaning it was identified.
