Sighting in Rentree Atmospherique — (reg) Grand Est, March 31, 2014

France

Sighting on March 31, 2014 in Rentree Atmospherique — (reg) Grand Est (France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a meteor or fireball (class A).

What happened

At around 10:33 p.m. on the evening of 31 March 2014, several people in different parts of France saw a luminous phenomenon move across the night sky. GEIPAN collected three witness accounts from three separate places: Strasbourg in the Bas-Rhin, Peigney in the Haute-Marne, and Rombas in the Moselle.

On that same day, specialist websites logged many sightings, not only in France but also in Germany. The directions given by the witnesses matched the reconstructed path of an atmospheric re-entry, which can be viewed on the amsmeteors website. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as A: the re-entry of meteoroids.
