Sighting in Riedisheim, March 9, 2013

Haut-Rhin, Grand Est, France

Sighting on March 9, 2013 in Riedisheim (Haut-Rhin, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 11:15 p.m., a witness sitting on their terrace saw several yellow luminous balls pass silently across the sky, which intrigued them. The objects moved in a group, more or less organised, and crossed the sky within a few minutes. The sighting took place on a Saturday evening in an urban area.

GEIPAN noted that the account has all the characteristics of a sighting of Thai lanterns: yellow luminous objects (more often described as yellow-orange), travelling in groups and drifting with the local wind, which blew from the southwest to the west according to the Infoclimat record. Because the case showed little strangeness and the neighbourhood is densely built up, it was not considered reasonable to try to find whoever released them. The witness did not confirm this hypothesis, but nothing in their account contradicts it. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
