Sighting in Huningue, May 26, 1980
Haut-Rhin, Grand Est, France
Sighting on May 26, 1980 in Huningue (Haut-Rhin, France). After investigation, GEIPAN considers this phenomenon unexplained (class D).
What happened
At about 7 p.m., two people out walking noticed an unusual object in a clear sky. One of them, a flight engineer officer, described it as metallic in appearance, with a round base and an upper part shaped like a silver-colored dome. The object hovered about 200 to 300 metres above the ground and seemed to oscillate on its axis. Its underside was darker and occasionally gave off a reddish glow.
The sighting lasted about 6 minutes. The witnesses heard no noise and saw no condensation. The object then vanished into the clouds, moving upward in successive steps.
A radar echo was recorded at Basel/Mulhouse airport, but it was lost among private and general aviation traffic and could hardly be used. No other witnesses and no further information turned up, either in France or in the German border area. GEIPAN classified the case as D: the phenomenon remains unexplained.
