Shortly after midnight, motorists saw the road light up as if in broad daylight for four to five seconds. They then noticed a glowing ball followed by a trail, moving from west to east. It gave off what sounded like crackling. It soon vanished behind the landscape.

Elsewhere in the area, other witnesses heard a loud explosion or saw a flash. The gendarmerie found no trace of anything having fallen in the sector.

The GEIPAN classified the case as B: the witnesses most likely observed an atmospheric re-entry.
